Chelsea have moved first in the race for Jorrel Hato, opening initial talks with Ajax as Enzo Maresca targets authority on the left side of his back line.

The teenager broke into Ajax at sixteen and logged fifty appearances last season, splitting duties between centre back and left back with the calm of a veteran and the legs of a sprinter. His reading of danger, comfort in tight spaces, and progressive passing carried Ajax back into the Champions League.

For Chelsea, the logic is clear. Ben Chilwell and Renato Veiga are expected to seek exits, while Marc Cucurella carried over four thousand minutes last year.

Rotation is not a luxury this time, it is protection. Hato offers flexibility and a left foot that fits Maresca’s build up patterns, allowing inverted full back looks or a back three in possession without a substitution.

Liverpool are in the conversation as per Ben Jacobs. Their recruitment team wants a young left sided defender in the twenty to twenty two range, and Hato matches the brief.

Yet his pathway to minutes may be cleaner at Stamford Bridge, where the calendar stretches across every competition and the captaincy of Reece James demands balance on the opposite flank.

Ajax hold a strong hand. Hato has three years left, no release clause, and a public price near sixty million, though a fee closer to forty is considered possible.

The clock will decide the rest. Move now, or watch a rival plant a flag.

The stakes are high, the margins thin now.
