Every time Chelsea appears to be on the verge of progress, another obstacle seems to drag them back down. The most recent example came in the match against Brighton, where there were both positives and fresh frustrations.

The return of Romeo Lavia and Benoît Badiashile to the squad should have been a major boost, especially given the long list of injuries that have plagued the team.

Lavia, in particular, offers a level of stability in midfield that has been missing, while Badiashile provides another body in defence during a period of real shortage. However, Trevoh Chalobah’s red card has now created a fresh problem, ruling him out of the next league match.

It feels like Chelsea takes two steps forward only to take one back again. Lavia’s presence is hugely valuable, particularly when compared with the inexperience of Andrey Santos.

The youngster has clear potential, but his mistake against Brighton—leading to Chalobah’s dismissal—highlighted how far he still has to go before becoming a reliable option at this level. Lavia will need time to regain his sharpness after so long out, but once fit, he could be pivotal in helping the midfield function smoothly again.

Badiashile’s situation is slightly different. His fitness record has always been questionable, and while he has shown flashes of quality, he hasn’t yet developed into the commanding centre-back Chelsea desperately needs. With Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo both sidelined and Wesley Fofana also unavailable until after the international break due to a concussion, the French defender may have no choice but to step in.

Chalobah will still be available for Tuesday’s game against Benfica, but it remains uncertain whether Badiashile can handle two matches in such quick succession. If he can’t, youngster Josh Acheampong could be called upon, highlighting just how stretched Chelsea’s defensive options have become.
