Arsenal are reportedly edging closer to signing Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande, according to Caught Offside.

The 21-year-old Ivory Coast international has risen rapidly since joining Sporting from Danish side FC Midtjylland in January 2023.

He played a key role in guiding the Portuguese giants to the Liga Portugal title last season and also lifted the Africa Cup of Nations with his country in 2024.

The Gunners have tracked Diomande for several years, though they have yet to make a formal move.

His former manager Ruben Amorim’s switch to Manchester United sparked talk of a reunion at Old Trafford, but reports suggest United are not planning to pursue him.

Despite long-standing interest from Chelsea and monitoring from Bayern Munich, Arsenal are now considered the frontrunners.

Sporting would be willing to sell for around £42 million, despite Diomande having a release clause of £68 million. The player himself is said to prefer a move to the Premier League, making Arsenal a strong destination.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Diomande combines strength with technical quality, marking him out as one of Europe’s most exciting young defenders.

However, Mikel Arteta’s side is already well-stocked at centre-back, which raises questions over whether defensive reinforcements should be prioritised.

Instead, some believe Arsenal’s funds would be better spent on a striker.

Even so, Arsenal’s pursuit of Diomande highlights their intent to strengthen key areas for both the present and future.

It remains to be seen whether they formalise their interest this January or push for a deal in the summer transfer window.
