Chelsea’s transfer drive has shifted from firepower to fortification, and Ajax’s Jorrel Hato is now firmly in their sights.

After spending over £100 million on attacking reinforcements, the Blues have moved to strengthen their defence. According to Fabrizio Romano, they have already agreed on personal terms with the 19-year-old,uck personal terms with the 19-year-old and the player has formally requested to leave Ajax.

Talks between the clubs are entering the decisive stage, with a fee of around £35 million expected to seal the deal—a move that would derail Arsenal’s long-standing pursuit of the youngster.

The Gunners had spoken with Hato’s camp just last month, but Chelsea’s proactive approach has given them the edge. If finalised, it would mark a significant addition to Mauricio Pochettino’s backline.

Hato’s profile fits Chelsea’s project perfectly. Young, adaptable, and affordable, he combines defensive intelligence with precise tackling and anticipation.

Standing just over six feet tall, he offers strong aerial presence and is equally comfortable with the ball at his feet, often breaking lines with progressive passes.

His versatility only adds to his appeal. Primarily a centre-back, Hato can operate on either side of the pairing and has the skillset to play at left-back, providing valuable depth behind Marc Cucurella—particularly if Renato Veiga departs.

His ability to carry the ball forward and dribble out of pressure makes him a rare defensive asset.

The length of his potential contract will be closely watched, given Chelsea’s trend of securing young signings on extended deals.

With both player and club aligned, only final negotiations stand in the way of a deal that could anchor Chelsea’s defense for years.
