The alarm is ringing.

Chelsea’s defense has faltered. Fitness issues, schoolboy errors, a lack of leadership, and brute force—especially against dynamic forwards—are the cracks Enzo Maresca cannot ignore.

So they’ve turned their gaze to Bologna’s fortress: Sam Beukema. The Dutch center-back, standing at 6 ft 2 in, is enjoying a breakout season in Serie A and has caught the eye of Chelsea scouts.

They were present during Bologna’s 2–1 win over AC Milan, impressed by his composure and defensive control. Reports suggest he helped snuff out Milan’s attack, earning acclaim from several observers as per Reddit reports.

He’s not alone in attracting attention. Inter Milan, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid are all monitoring his progress as reported by SempreInter.com.

Some believe Juventus have an edge, thanks to their former coach Thiago Motta, who once worked with Beukema and could reunite with him.

Beukema is 26. Not the youth-centric profile Chelsea typically target. But Conte’s Napoli reportedly value experience too, and other big names are circling.

In a CaughtOffside report,  His estimated market value stands around €30 million—a steep rise from the €10 million Bologna paid AZ Alkmaar in 2023.

Maresca must balance urgency and long-term planning. Beukema fits the profile of someone who can steady the backline immediately. But Chelsea strategists wonder if chasing the Dutchman disrupts their youth-first DNA.

Still, the interest is real. And with all eyes on the summer window, Chelsea’s rebuilding blueprint may hinge on this moment—a chance to reclaim identity, structure, and ambition.
