Chelsea head into summer needing midfield depth. Despite strong showings from Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Maresca wants reinforcements—a defensive midfielder and a creative spark.

Simon Phillips has claimed Chelsea are targeting Aurelien Tchouaméni at Real Madrid, hoping to leverage Madrid’s interest in Fernández to engineer a swap.

Madrid reportedly see Fernández—a British‑record pick for Chelsea in 2023—as ideal to reshape their engine room post‑Modrić and Kroos.

But whispers say Tchouaméni isn’t interested in leaving Spain. Real trust him. He’s central to Carlo Ancelotti’s plans. Under contract until 2028, he’s won La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey since joining from Monaco.

That makes a swap awkward. Fernández is happy at Stamford Bridge. He’s under contract until 2032, seen as integral to Maresca’s system. Any departure would demand a colossal fee according to Chelsea News.com.

Still, Chelsea’s midfield remains light. Lavia’s injury history and Caicedo’s heavy usage leave questions. Tchouaméni would bring composure, defensive nous and aerial strength—qualities Chelsea currently lack.

But with Fernández in place and no exits announced, the urgency to sign another defensive enforcer feels low.

Even if talk of a marquee deal gains traction, it’s far from certain it will materialize. Everything hinges on Fernández’s stance and Real Madrid’s willingness to let Tchouaméni go.

Chelsea will likely be busy—defensive revamp, attacking additions—but no signing feels as dramatic as a swap for Tchouaméni. And Fernández? He’s not listed for sale.

Purpose, not panic, guides Maresca’s rebuild—for now.
