Chelsea have made their move. Initial contact has been made with Lyon for Malick Fofana, the 20-year-old Belgian winger whose rise since leaving Gent last winter has been nothing short of electric.
From his debut cameo in a Coupe de France defeat to Le Havre to becoming an irreplaceable figure in Lyon’s attack, Fofana has made every minute count.
As reported by French transfer expert Hugo Guillemet, Lyon have set their price: £42 million. Chelsea haven’t bid yet, but according to French sources, they are ready to “take the next step” in securing one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
It’s not just scouting hype. Fofana’s blend of blistering pace, direct dribbling, and unpredictable flair makes him tailor-made for Enzo Maresca’s system.
The Chelsea head coach has already been clear—wingers are a priority. With Jadon Sancho absent and only Noni Madueke, Pedro Neto, and youngster Tyrique George as natural wide options, there is a void to fill.
Last season, only Madueke matched Fofana’s attacking productivity, delivering 16 goal contributions. Fofana brings not only numbers but also the chaos factor defenders fear—a trait Chelsea’s attack has sorely lacked.
Still, there’s a twist. Reports from Germany suggest the Blues have a pre-agreement with Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. Whether Chelsea prioritise Fofana, Bynoe-Gittens, or attempt both could define their summer.
For now, the door is open. The question is how quickly Chelsea choose to walk through it.
