Arne Slot’s preferred centre-back pairing this season has been Ibrahima Konaté alongside captain Virgil van Dijk, with Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez providing backup. However, depth in this position remains a concern.

Gomez, who was linked with a summer exit last year, has endured another injury-hit campaign, limiting his involvement. Meanwhile, Van Dijk’s future is uncertain as his current contract expires at the end of the season.

While Liverpool are keen to extend the Dutchman’s stay, the fact that he turns 35 next year has prompted the club to start planning for the long term.

According to Fichajes, Araujo has emerged as Liverpool’s priority target. The 25-year-old has impressed in La Liga with his pace, aerial strength, and commanding presence, making him a natural fit for a high defensive line.

The Reds are reportedly ready to table an £86m offer to tempt Barcelona into selling, with the Spanish giants still grappling with financial issues. Such a bid could be hard for the Catalan club to refuse, and the Uruguayan defender may be intrigued by the challenge of the Premier League.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Araujo offers recovery speed, physicality, and the ability to chip in with crucial goals.

While some might argue the fee is steep, Araujo’s potential to be a long-term successor to Van Dijk makes him a tempting option. The coming transfer window will reveal whether Liverpool decide to move from interest to action.
