Liverpool’s summer rebuild has been bold—Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez have all arrived.
Yet, despite strengthening in multiple areas, the Premier League champions have yet to secure a new central defender. That could soon change.
According to Caught Offside reports, Liverpool are in prime position to land Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. The 25-year-old, valued at around £45 million, is in the final year of his contract and is receptive to a move to Anfield.
Palace, aware of his status, may be ready to cash in rather than risk losing him for free.
The Reds’ need for a centre-back has sharpened. Jarrell Quansah’s departure to Bayer Leverkusen left a gap, Ibrahima Konate’s contract runs out next summer, and Virgil van Dijk is entering the latter stages of his career.
Securing Guehi would be a smart step, though finances could get tricky if Liverpool also push to sign Alexander Isak following his transfer request at Newcastle, particularly if Darwin Nunez stays. Still, Guehi’s arrival feels like a necessary investment.
Defensively, he’s solid—composed in duels, disciplined in positioning—but he’s not the ball-playing force Van Dijk is, nor as progressive as some of Europe’s modern centre-halves.
In Jurgen Klopp’s evolving system, that could be a limitation, though one offset by his defensive reliability.
Liverpool’s decision on whether to add a second centre-back may hinge on Konate’s renewal talks.
For now, Guehi looks the most immediate and attainable target to reinforce the heart of their defence before the window closes.
