Liverpool’s search for a defensive addition has taken them to Italy, where Giovanni Leoni’s rise at Parma has not gone unnoticed. Yet it is Tottenham who are currently moving faster according to Caught Offside reports.

The Reds, reshaping under Arne Slot, need a new centre-back after Jarell Quansah’s departure. Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace remains an option, but Leoni’s combination of height, timing, and composure has drawn fresh interest. At just 18 and already a Serie A standout, the 6ft 5in defender looks built for the Premier League’s demands.

Parma, however, are in no rush to part with him. His contract runs for another four years, and they are holding firm on a valuation between £26m and £35m.

That hasn’t deterred Spurs, who are stepping up negotiations after being impressed by his performances last season. Thomas Frank’s side, still adjusting after conceding 65 goals last term, are determined to solidify their backline—especially with Cristian Romero’s future uncertain and Radu Dragusin sidelined by a serious knee injury.

Liverpool’s interest is genuine, but their approach has been more measured. Slot wants the right fit, someone who can grow into the role while competing immediately, and Leoni’s profile ticks both boxes.

For now, though, the Merseyside club risk losing ground if Tottenham’s push turns into a decisive bid.

With Newcastle also preparing to enter the fray, the contest for Leoni is shaping into a three-way battle.

For Liverpool, the question is whether they are ready to accelerate talks and challenge Spurs head-on, or risk watching a long-term defensive solution slip away before the season begins.
