Liverpool are reportedly preparing a formal offer for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder João Gomes, a player also on Manchester United’s radar, according to Caught Offside.
Arne Slot, who has relied heavily on Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch throughout the season, is looking to reinforce his midfield options. While Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo have offered support, the Reds are keen on adding depth and dynamism to the engine room.
According to Sky Sport News, the club previously pursued Martin Zubimendi, but failed to secure a deal. Now, attention has shifted to Gomes, who recently signed a contract extension with Wolves. Despite that, Wolves may be open to letting the 23-year-old leave should a suitable offer arrive. Liverpool are reportedly planning to test the waters with a £40 million bid.
However, they face strong competition. Manchester United and Arsenal are both monitoring Gomes, impressed by his consistent Premier League displays. United, in particular, are expected to revamp their midfield this summer.
Christian Eriksen is nearing the end of his contract and likely to depart, while Casemiro has been linked with an exit following a dip in form. Reports also suggest that United might cash in on young star Kobbie Mainoo to address financial concerns.
Gomes has emerged as a key figure at Wolves, known for his energy, pressing ability, and box-to-box presence. Comfortable in a double pivot, he’s also become a regular call-up for Brazil’s national team.
With multiple top clubs circling, Gomes could be one of the most sought-after midfielders in the upcoming transfer window.
