Man Utd in talks to sign Atalanta midfield powerhouse Ederson

Manchester United have opened discussions over a potential move for Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder Ederson, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

Ruben Amorim’s midfield options currently include Manuel Ugarte, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, and Toby Collyer, with Kobbie Mainoo capable of playing deeper but often deployed further forward.

Eriksen is set to depart as a free agent this summer, while Casemiro’s long-term future is uncertain despite recent improved performances. Injuries to Collyer have forced Amorim to use Bruno Fernandes — naturally an attacking midfielder — in a deeper role.

Romano reports that United could be willing to cash in on Casemiro and view Ederson as the ideal physical, high-energy midfielder to complement Ugarte. Internal meetings have taken place, and United have already informed Ederson’s representatives of their interest.

Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle, but Champions League qualification could prove decisive, with several other clubs also keen and able to offer Europe’s top competition.

Atalanta are braced for change this summer, with manager Gian Piero Gasperini set to depart and the club open to selling one or two key players. However, they value Ederson at over £38 million.

United’s lack of physical presence in midfield has often left them exposed in high-intensity Premier League matches.

A partnership between Ugarte and Ederson could provide the steel and energy needed to compete at the highest level.

Whether United can beat the competition and bring him to Old Trafford will be one of the stories to watch this summer.
