Manchester United have officially opened talks with Girona over the potential signing of left-back Miguel Gutierrez ahead of the January transfer window, according to Teamtalk. The move signals the Red Devils’ intent to reshape their squad under new manager Ruben Amorim, who is expected to implement a 3-4-3 system requiring dynamic wing-backs.

Gutierrez, a 23-year-old Spanish defender, has reportedly been granted permission by Girona to negotiate with United. Although his contract includes a £29 million release clause, Girona are said to be open to a lower fee due to a 50% sell-on clause owed to Real Madrid, his former club.

Manchester United’s interest in Gutierrez comes at a time when their left-back options have been heavily affected by injuries. Luke Shaw has suffered repeated setbacks, while Tyrell Malacia is only just returning from a lengthy spell out. Diogo Dalot has been filling in on the left but remains a natural right-sided defender and has struggled with consistency.

Amorim appears eager to bring in a specialist for the role, and Gutierrez fits the bill. The Spaniard has impressed this season with five goal contributions in 22 appearances for Girona. Defensively, he averages nearly six recoveries and two tackles per game, while also boasting an 89% pass accuracy rate and six big chances created—highlighting his balance between attacking flair and defensive reliability.

Although Real Madrid retain a buy-back option, they may choose to cash in as their focus shifts to signing Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich. That puts United in a strong position to land the highly-rated full-back early.

If secured, Gutierrez could play a key role in helping Amorim shape his system at Old Trafford.
