Man Utd weigh shock £60m move for Rafael Leao

Manchester United are considering an unexpected swoop for AC Milan’s Rafael Leao as part of their summer rebuild.

Having already secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves and pushing ahead with negotiations for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, the club remains intent on adding more firepower.

According to Caught Offside, United could soon test Milan’s stance with an opening £60 million bid, though the Italian giants are believed to value the Portuguese winger between £68–85 million. Any move is likely to depend on player sales.

The prospect, however, seems improbable. United only recently met Cunha’s release clause—paid in instalments—and are still locked in talks with Brentford after their second offer for Mbeumo was rejected.

Manager Ruben Amorim’s system also complicates matters. He favors two central attacking midfielders operating behind a lone striker, a shape that leaves little room for a traditional left winger like Leao.

While the 26-year-old has occasionally been used as a striker, his real threat lies in drifting in from the left with pace and trickery—qualities that may not align with Amorim’s tactical vision.

Last season, Leao produced 12 goals and 13 assists for Milan, but his reluctance to track back is a concern. Amorim demands high defensive work rate from his forwards, with an emphasis on pressing and ball recovery.

Leao’s attacking flair is unquestionable, but his limited contribution without the ball may deter United from advancing their interest.

For now, Leao’s name lingers in the rumour mill—a dazzling talent whose fit at Old Trafford is as uncertain as the bid itself.
