Manchester United may consider bringing Alvaro Fernandez back to Old Trafford next year, with the potential decision influenced by incoming manager Ruben Amorim, according to Givemesport.
With Amorim set to take over the reins at United from November 11 after departing Sporting Lisbon, the Spaniard’s future could be one of the early items on his agenda. Having managed in Portugal, Amorim is familiar with Fernandez’s development at Benfica and may advise the club on a potential return.
Although Fernandez has a £42 million release clause, Givemesport reports that United included a buy-back option worth just £16.7 million — a figure that would make his return considerably more affordable.
Benfica made the 21-year-old’s move permanent earlier this summer by activating a £5 million purchase clause following his loan spell. Now, United could look to re-sign him, especially as they continue to struggle with injuries in the left-back position.
Luke Shaw has endured a lengthy spell on the sidelines with recurring injuries, most recently suffering a setback in his recovery from a calf issue. Meanwhile, Tyrell Malacia has been out of action since May 2023 due to knee surgery and is only now beginning light training.
In their absence, the likes of Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez, and Noussair Mazraoui have filled in on the left, but none are natural fits. Bringing Fernandez back could offer a reliable and specialist solution.
A naturally attack-minded full-back, Fernandez could thrive in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation, potentially slotting in at left wing-back — a role that aligns well with his strengths.
Should he maintain his current form into the new year, Amorim might give the green light for United to trigger the buy-back clause and welcome Fernandez back into the squad.
