Liverpool headed into the international break with three wins from three Premier League games, securing a 1-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The decisive moment came from a stunning free-kick by Dominik Szoboszlai, which proved to be the difference in an otherwise cagey contest.

For much of the match, Arsenal sat deep with numbers behind the ball, frustrating Liverpool’s attack. It ultimately required a touch of brilliance, and Szoboszlai delivered it in style.

Head coach Arne Slot praised the Hungarian international afterwards, calling his display “unbelievable” during his post-match press conference. In the post-match press conference, Slot said:

“As a midfielder he is always the first one to track back, to press high and today I don’t think he did anything wrong. An unbelievable game from him in a position he probably played only two or three times in his life. So, that tells you a lot about the mentality he has.”

Szoboszlai Shines at Right-Back

With Jeremie Frimpong sidelined by injury, Szoboszlai once again filled in at right-back, just as he did in the 3-2 win over Newcastle the previous week. Preferred to Conor Bradley, he impressed with an all-round performance that earned him an 8.5/10 rating from FotMob. He completed 90% of his passes, created one chance, and scored with his only attempt on goal.

Defensively, he kept Gabriel Martinelli quiet throughout the game, racking up 14 defensive actions, including six clearances, while winning 100% of his tackles.

Although his stint at full-back is expected to be temporary with Frimpong likely returning after the international break, Szoboszlai’s back-to-back standout performances in the role may have boosted his standing ahead of Bradley in the right-back hierarchy.

Once Frimpong returns, Szoboszlai will resume competing with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch for a midfield role.
