It’s happening again.

Another injury. Another crisis. Lisandro Martínez—United’s heartbeat at the back—is out for the season. And likely won’t return in time for the next as per Givemesport reports.

Manchester United are back in the market. Not for a gamble—this time, they want familiarity.

The name lingers. He was Erik ten Hag’s preferred defensive target last summer.

But INEOS, United’s new powerbrokers, already owned OGC Nice. UEFA’s multi-club rules blocked the move. By September 2025, that door reopens as reported in The Telegraph.

West Ham, sensing the opportunity, swooped in. Todibo joined on loan, with a £34 million obligation to buy, as per BBC reports.

But it hasn’t clicked.

Fifteen appearances. Interrupted rhythm. Injuries. Questions.

Now, United could pounce—again.

Givemesport report the Red Devils are exploring a deal to buy the Frenchman outright from West Ham this summer.

With Amorim set to have final say on all transfers if appointed, Todibo’s name may re-emerge on the shortlist according to Givemesport.

Todibo remains an elegant, modern defender. Composed on the ball. Strong in the air. His Ligue 1 form once drew comparisons to Raphael Varane. But in England, he’s been more ghost than gladiator.

Still, the timing might be right.

West Ham could look to sell for instant profit—especially if they decide Todibo isn’t part of their long-term spine. United, desperate for defensive depth, might find £40 million a fair risk for a once-wanted name.

There’s no nostalgia here. Just necessity.

And a door left slightly ajar.
